Restaurants

Welcome, may we take your order? Enjoy the feast while it lasts, Redecorators, because we’re about to share a spoonful of knowledge!

Much like the “working triangle” we discussed when it came to kitchens, restaurants have a need for easy circulation and room for foot traffic. The area between the kitchen, the register and the tables needs to be accessible to the staff at all times.

Another aspect to consider is the durability of the fabrics or materials you choose for the chairs, the wooden finishes for the tables and the overall style of the restaurant. The things you choose must be easy to clean and withstand the high traffic of lunchtime, so take care to not only choose beautiful materials, but also durable ones.

Most restaurants have a certain theme by which all the table and chair designs are chosen. A great way to let a restaurant’s “character” shine through is through wall colors, large art pieces and clever finishes like leather sofas or chrome handles.

Today’s task:

This restaurant opted for a more minimal feeling. You can see the beautiful light fixtures chosen for it and the empty space allowing the workers to travel freely between guest to guest. Create a beautiful restaurant by choosing the correct art pieces, colors and materials!

Homework:

Here’s the perfect excuse to invite a friend to brunch! Check out a few different restaurants and cafes. What works, interior design wise, and what’s left to be desired? If we’re talking about a more casual place, is there enough space for long lunchtime queues? Does the food served remind you of the overall design theme or did it miss the mark?

Practice makes perfect:

Practice today’s lesson on the Season Pass challenge, “Lesson 11”, going live on September 27th at 3:00 PM UTC
